There is currently a demand by many areas of the health care industry that call for a standardization in medical procedure terminology and coding. This is especially true in regards to insurance companies and medical billing and coding for services rendered. The actual scope of such an undertaking would require an expert level of skill at understanding and operating this type of system on a global scale. There are two types of experts in this field.

A Medical Biller acts as an intermediary between the office performing the medical procedure and the insurance company or third party that will be paying the claim a medical billing and coding specialist must ensure timely and accurate payment for all parties involved.
A Medical Coder is charged with the import and export of the specifically coded data that has been provided. This may at times involve conversion of medically charted documents directly from treatment records and then applying a person specific diagnosis to a universally accepted coded number for treatment and prognosis.

Essential to any part of this currently expanding career path is education and instruction from some type of higher education system. For an education program to be successful in preparing people for this type of career the curriculum offered would need to cover basic anatomy and human physiology and an application of the different types of coding that would be involved. This would overlap with an integrated course of study in local and federal jurisdictions in regards to insurance practices and legal matters. An in depth understanding of international classifications of diseases would also be very practical.

An alternative field in this type of career can be approached from an online platform. A fully integrated system with constantly updated data streams could be of great benefit to all parties involved. Knowledgeable and well trained personal would be able to overcome major geographic and social obstacles and at the same time provide an efficient and secure exchange of information.
Pursuing a course of study in this type of field can begin with a simple certificate program and expand from there to short-course study an associate’s degree and even a bachelor’s degree.

It would also be necessary to ensure that the current course of study being pursued is relevant and will give the graduate a marketable skill once complete. Therefore it is recommended that authorities such as The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) should be sought out references. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is another authority on where to receive proper training in medical billing and coding.
